Press Release Summary: Jonathan Evans, MD of Discovery Recruitment, has donated £3000 to Jimmy’s Farm, a rare pig breeder in Essex, helping to keep one of its rarest breeds from extinction. This followed a documentary series on the farm, reporting financial difficulties as feed prices soared.
Press Release Body: The flooding and heavy rain of 2007 completely ruined barley crops across the UK. In turn, this meant that the price of barley soared, causing the price of pig feed to double overnight. This put huge financial pressure on Jimmy’s Farm, which had over 90 breeding sows to feed every day. Every pig farmer in England was affected and an increasing number have been forced into bankruptcy or have given up the trade for good.
After five years of building one of the largest rare pig breeding units in England, Jimmy’s Farm had to take radical action to avoid closure of the farm, which is open to the public every day. The farm’s only option was to decrease breeding stock from 90 sows to 30, simply because the price of pig-feed was too high to keep the farm running productively.
Michaela Furney, joint owner of the farm says, “Jonathan’s contribution has meant that we can keep on more of our breeding sows, effectively helping us keep a rare breed that little bit further away from extinction. We were blown away by Jonathan and Sarah’s generosity and though our beautiful rare breed pigs can’t show their gratitude, I know that if they’re half as thankful as we are, there would be an appreciative ‘oink’ of relief.”
